Ford's new slogan: Go Further

Ford_logo_3

A history of Ford Motor Co. could be told with the succession of slogans it has used over the decades - some remembered within the company as rallying cries, some more as punch lines.

Now, six years into a comeback from near collapse, the automaker has a new slogan that underscores confidence that its recovery is almost complete: "Go Further."

For an automaker with 166,000 workers worldwide and a history of riding boom into bust, the slogan is intended in part as a warning against complacency after three years of profits, executives say.

"Go Further" will be used in marketing campaigns, replacing "Drive One" in North America and "Feel the Difference" in Europe. Those slogans were coined to help overcome wariness on the part of consumers about the quality and performance of Ford cars as the carmaker bounced back.

"We are at a different point now in our company's history," Jim Farley, global head of sales and marketing, told Reuters.

Ford is not the only automaker that has relied heavily on a catchy slogan. Crosstown rival Chrysler, now under the control of Italy's Fiat SpA has played up both sides of its heritage with the year-old "Imported from Detroit."

At General Motors Co., former CEO Ed Whitacre was amazed in 2009 that the automaker did not have a slogan that reflected a mission statement, so he supplied one: "Design, build and sell the world's best vehicles."

But Ford, founded in 1903, has a particularly long history of using slogans meant to resonate both inside its glasswalled Dearborn, Mich., headquarters and outside with customers. Its sloganeering goes back at least as far as 1914's "Ford: The Universal Car."

For the past five years, chief executive Alan Mulally, 66, has driven Ford's turnaround under the global slogan "One Ford." The motto underscored the need to unify the automaker's operations and put an end to executive infighting.

In December, the automaker announced it would begin paying a dividend for the first time since 2006, after moving within a notch of regaining an investment grade credit rating.

Farley insists the new slogan is not a replacement for "One Ford," which he said is a motto that reflects the automaker's core global strategy. And although Ford plans to use "Go Further" to market new vehicles around the world this year, the phrase is also meant to motivate its employees.

"We really see it as kind of documenting the culture or the DNA of the company," he said.

Farley said Ford looked at the success of "Just Do It" for Nike and "I'm Lovin' It" at McDonald's in crafting its new slogan.

One expert said that, while Ford's slogan would resonate for employees who know what the company has been through in recent years, it would not deliver the same kind of message to outsiders. "I don't think it's that good. It's a little too inside the industry," said Jim Wangers, a marketing analyst in Oceanside, Calif.

In the late 1960s, Ford tried to rally baby boomers around the slogan, "Ford has a better idea," using the image of a light bulb to signal inspiration instead of the "o" in Ford.

In the 1980s, when Ford was scrambling to counter inroads into the U.S. market by Japanese rivals led by Toyota Motor Corp., the automaker rolled out the slogan, "Quality is Job 1."

In early 2006, Ford dubbed a wrenching restructuring, "The Way Forward." The plan involved closing 14 plants and cutting more than 25,000 jobs. Some workers joked at the time that it looked more like a giant step backward.

When Mulally arrived later that year, he tapped into the company's history of sloganeering with "One Ford." Mulally even insisted that all workers be issued laminated cards with the turnaround motto: "One Ford, One Team, One Plan, One Goal."

Mulally introduced the "Go Further" slogan to Ford's employees around the world in a New Year's message. The slogan is already being used in advertisements and on Facebook for Ford in Europe. It will be introduced in markets from India to North America later this year.

Justin Wartell, head of brand strategy for Interbrand of Dayton, Ohio, said the challenge for Ford will be to make the slogan concrete in a way that makes sense to consumers.

"Any automaker can use that," Wartell said of the new slogan. "What makes it Ford? What makes it stand out?"

Elena Ford, Ford's global director of marketing and the great-great granddaughter of founder Henry Ford, said the new slogan was essentially a reminder to employees that they had to set the bar higher after recent gains. Her way of describing that could itself be turned into a slogan.

"We go further so you can," she said.

Allan, thank you for sharing your experience

"I have owned about 4000 cars and sold 400 houses and 200 pieces of land. I recently purchased an older truck from Fairfield Ford. I was impressed with the courtesy and complete honesty about the condition of vehicle before i drove 1.5 hours to see it. I told them i owned a 2011 Toyota Tacoma and needed to sell it they made me an offer and i accepted. As i have been stricken with Leukemia i expressed to them my energy level was low and they were very considerate. Making my purchase and easy flow transaction. The sale of my Toyota went real smooth and received my funds in a timely manner. My sales person was Devon and his partner. I would recommend these salesmen and the dealership."

2013 Ford Fusion Named Best in Show in Detroit

2012_ford_fusion_photo
The new Ford Fusion has yet to reach a single customer, but it has already impressed enough to score an award - Best in Show at the 2012 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). This was judged based on a single factor, which is the most notable car that will be remembered five years from now.

“It’s very rare for a midsize sedan to win Best in Show,” said editor Wes Raynal of AutoWeek, who gave the award. “I think it’s the first of a lot of awards the Fusion is going to win this year.”

“I’ve been with the company for 13 years,” said J Mays, Ford chief creative officer, “and I can truly say this is the best car ever to come out of the design and engineering center in Dearborn. We are delighted for the entire global design team, because this really was a global effort.”

We’ll remind you that the Fusion is built under the “One Ford” directive as a global product, and so it will also be marketed in other markets around the world, including Europe where it will become the next Mondeo.

Ford Repeats with Top Honors in Polk's Automotive Loyalty Awards

Ford_logo_2
Ford Motor Co. took top honors for the second year in a row during the 16th annual Polk Automotive Loyalty Awards, presented last week at the Automotive News World Congress in Detroit.

Ford was a repeat winner in several categories, including: Overall Loyalty to Manufacturer; Overall Loyalty to Make; African-American Market Loyalty to Make; and Mid/Full-Size Pickup for its F-Series truck lineup, which has been honored in that category 14 out of the past 16 years.

Loyalty is determined when a household that owns a new vehicle returns to market and purchases or leases another new vehicle of the same model or make. Polk tracks owner loyalty throughout the year and regularly works with customers to effectively manage owner loyalty through in-depth analysis of automotive shopping behaviors, related market influencers and development of retention strategies.

The 2011 awards are based on an analysis of 5.5 million return-to-market events during the 2011 model year. The model year ran from Oct. 1, 2010 through Sept. 30, 2011.

This year’s awards also recognized several OEMs as repeat winners across a variety of categories.

“OEMs are paying increasingly close attention to loyalty as the industry begins to rebound,” said Stephen Polk, chairman, president and CEO of Polk. “Together with some of the retention programs manufacturers have put in place, and several new product launches in the past few years, there are a lot of exciting options in showrooms for consumers who are in the market for new vehicles.”

Even though industry volumes have been down the past few years, loyalty rates have continued to increase.

“It’s clear that keeping customers is an integral part of the business strategy at the OEM and dealer levels,” said Smith. “In addition, a renewed emphasis on ethnic marketing has improved loyalty to the brand and manufacturer.”

2013 Ford Fusion melds world car sensibilities

2013_ford_fusion_photo
Last year, Ford updated the Focus, combining U.S. and European variants into a single world car. Now the company repeats that strategy with the new Fusion midsize sedan.

Ford mixed about one part Fusion with two parts Mondeo, its European midsize sedan, added one more part of new stuff, and came up with a sleek looking high tech sedan. The new car does away with the previous Fusion's three-bar grille and squarish roofline, opting for a grille that shares design language with the Fiesta and Focus. The roofline now forms a graceful line back toward the trunk.

The shape and cant of the grille are inviting comparisons to Aston Martin, while the side profile bears some resemblance to the previous decade's Jaguar S-type.

Ford updated its engine offerings, as well. The new Fusion will be available with a 1.6- or a 2-liter version of its Ecoboost engine, which employs direct injection and turbocharging to boost power while maximizing fuel efficiency. Ford estimates the the 1.6-liter will produce 179 horsepower and the 2-liter 237 horsepower.

The Fusion Hybrid also gets an update. Ford lowered its engine displacement from 2.5 to 2 liters, and updated the hybrid drive system with lithium-ion batteries. The company is expecting 47 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway, but has not released a combined horsepower number for the car. The lower displacement may take a toll on acceleration.

There will also be a plug-in hybrid version of the Fusion, the Energi, which Ford says will earn an EPA rating of better than 100 MPGe, the equivalent rating the EPA is using for electric vehicles.

The previous-generation Fusion Hybrid served as a prototype for the MyFord Touch system, which includes LCDs in the instrument cluster that can be configured for information display by the driver. So it is fitting the entire Fusion line gets the latest version of MyFord Touch, with its improved graphic layout and response times. The car will also get the latest version of Sync.

The Fusion will benefit from a large number of driver assistance features, including adaptive cruise control and blind spot detection. It will include a lane-keeping assist feature, which warns the driver and nudges the steering wheel if the car is drifting across a lane line. An automatic parking system, also available on the Focus, detects parallel parking spaces, then helps the driver by steering the car into the spot.

Ford has not disclosed pricing yet, but the various Fusion models should come between $20,000 and $30,000. All of the variants, except the Energi plug-in hybrid, will hit showrooms in the fall. A Ford spokesman said he expects the Energi late this year or early next year.

Thank you, Jeannette, for this great review

"Stopped by Ford Fairfield this evening to check out the Ford Escape.  Luckily, Gus introduced himself to us and was a GREAT help!!!!  Very pleased with how knowledgeable, friendly and NON-pushy Gus was.  Didn't leave the dealership with a new car because we are going to think about this investment (Ford Escape Hybrid)...will definitely take the drive from South San Francisco to Fairfield to work with Gus and get our new car!

Also had the chance to meet the dealer manager, Dustin.  Very down to Earth, frank and informative.  Appreciated the non-agressiveness...will be back!"

Vincent, thanks for sharing your experience with us. We appreciate your business.

"These guys stand out with their customer service and no-nonsense pricing at the beginning. They look for customer satisfaction, allowing a customer to cancel the contract for a used car at no extra charge for two days. Other dealers would charge for this. They aim at a realistic price for vehicles as well in their "no-hassle" salesroom. Scott sets a standard that's hard to beat!"

The Ford F Series Pickup tops the 20 bestselling vehicles in 2011

Ford_f-250_photo_2

Even though we are constantly plagued by the idiots who insist that rising fuel prices will crush the American truck segment as a whole, we see that once again that the two bestselling models in the US are full size trucks. The Ford F Series won by a very comfortable margin with 584,917 trucks sold compared to just 415,130 examples of the Chevy Silverado sold last year – a gap of almost 170,000 units. The Toyota Camry fought through a massive shot to its reputation via the unintended acceleration lawsuits to once again finish third with 308,510 sedans sold, making the Camry the bestselling car in America once again. The Nissan Altima was fourth in sales in 2011 with 268,981 sedan and coupes sold after finishing just 7th in total sales in 2010 while the Ford Escape proved to be America’s bestselling sport utility vehicle in 2011, showing up in 5th place on this year’s list with 254,293 units sold. Also, like the murmurs that the sport utility vehicle is fading away, the Escape jumped from 13th place in 2010 to 5th place in 2011 – making it the bestselling SUV in all the land.

Overall, General Motors had the most vehicles on the list of the top 20 bestselling vehicles in 2011 with six vehicles on the list – three cars, two trucks, and one SUV. Ford was second overall with four vehicles out of the top 20 with two trucks, one car and one SUV in addition to having the bestselling truck, SUV and, of course, the claim of having the nation’s bestselling vehicle. Honda had a rough year but still managed 3 of the top 20 bestselling vehicles in American with two cars and one SUV although all three of their vehicles on the list dropped on the list compared to 2010 sales. Japanese counterpart Toyota managed just two of the top 20 vehicles – although Toyota gets to take home the title of the bestselling car in America.

Korean automaker Hyundai saw their Elantra and Sonata return to the top 20 list for 2011 but both of these models increased from where they appeared on the list in 2010. Finally, Nissan, Volkswagen and the Chrysler Group each had had one representative on the list with a pair of cars from Nissan and VW while the Chrysler Group saw their Ram pickup move up two spots from where the Ram finished in 2010. Names not on the list for 2011 that were included on the 2010 list of top movers are the Toyota Prius and the Subaru Legacy – both of which can look to the impact of the Japanese disasters earlier this year as well as increased competition for the cause of their dropping out of the top 20 selling models in America.

Below is the complete list of the top 20 bestselling models in America for the 2011 model year. The number and parenthesis is the 2010 rank for the given vehicle. Congradulations to Ford Motor Company for once again offering the bestselling vehicle in America!

1 Ford F-Series Truck 584,917 (1)
