Focus Electric finalist for 'Green Car of the Year'
The all-electric, plug-in vehicle is one of five finalists for Green Car Journal’s 2012 "Green Car of the Year" award.
“This year’s Green Car of the Year finalists underscore that there is no single solution to our transportation challenges,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and editor of GreenCar.com, in a release. “Here we have five exceptional answers to the question of how we’re going to increase efficiencies, reduce tailpipe and CO2 emissions, and decrease petroleum use.”
The Focus - the only American car finalist - is competing against the Mitsubishi i electric car, Honda Civic GX natural gas, Toyota Prius v hybrid and Volkswagen Passat TDI “clean” diesel.
The winner is expected to be announced Nov. 17 at the auto show.
Vehicles running on all fuels and technologies were considered for the award, including high-efficiency gasoline and diesel models along with ones that run on gaseous fuels, electricity and other alternative fuels.
The Focus’ closest competitor – technology-wise – is the Mitsubishi I, which is the only other all-electric vehicle finalist.
The Focus was expected to launch in 19 markets by the end of 2011, but is now scheduled to debut only in California and New York in 2011, then the rest of the markets in 2012.
General Motors Co. is the only American automaker to win the award in its six-year history. Last year, the 2011 Chevroelt Volt won, beating out the Nissan Leaf, Ford Fiesta and hybrid versions of the Hyundai Sonata and Lincoln MKZ; and the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid won in 2008.

Brad, we would like to thank you for your kind words and recommendation
"Ok, ok its a car dealership. Cars are expensive. Most times, you need a loan to get one.... This being said, I'll continue:
I tagged with my mom to go car shopping after she had been using my vehicle for about 9 mo. She finally found the car she wanted, so we headed out to Fairfield Ford. Upon arrival we met up with Michelle, I'm not going to call her a "Sales Person" because not once did she try to "Sell" us anything. Without wasting any time, Michelle took us to the car my mom was interested in. I realized the vehicle my mom was driving was priced approximately $4000 under Kelley Blue Book. I asked "Whats the deal with the price difference." She explained Fairfield Ford was a "Volume" dealership, not a "Value" dealership... The idea behind this is, if you sell cars cheaper (of course they are still profiting from them, its a business) you sell more cares, and the cars will sell themselves. This, as opposed to the "Volume" business model, where you try to make as much on one car as you can, allows them to "Let the customer sell the car." All in all, it made for the friendliest and most comfortable buying experience I've ever observed. So... by the end of the day, I was offered High Blue Book value on my vehicle as a trade in.... Yes, HIGH BLUE BOOK, not "Trade in value" there is a big difference. I found a car I liked and my mom and I rolled out of there with two new vehicles. Both of us got amazing deals! I definitely recommend anyone buying a vehicle, at least, give this place a look into. If you live a few miles away it might just be worth the drive, the deal may be that good."Wednesday, October 19, 2011

Ford Poised to Give More Drivers Safer Texting Alternatives
Ford has released its latest free SYNC® software update, G1 V3.2.2, to give more SYNC users the ability to have text messages read aloud to them while driving.
Tailored for owners of select SYNC-equipped 2011 and early-release 2012 vehicles, the update includes the emerging Message Access Profile (MAP) Bluetooth® standard, which is custom-made for the automotive hands-free environment and outlines a set of features and procedures used to exchange email, SMS and MMS between devices – in this case SYNC and the smartphone.
Last year, Ford announced it was voluntarily integrating MAP into SYNC for all 2011 MyFord Touch®-equipped vehicles and is now extending the capability to the broader SYNC user community – with thousands of 2011 and 2012 vehicles equipped with the first generation SYNC system.
“A limited population of phones has the capability to work with the text message readback feature of SYNC,” said Mark Porter, supervisor of SYNC Product Development. “With our initial adoption of MAP for our latest generation of SYNC and our recent efforts to integrate it into our previous variations of the system, we hope we are setting an example that encourages more collaboration between Ford, the phonemakers and the wireless industry to help drivers find smarter alternatives to hand-held texting while on the road.”
According to Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), MAP adoption by mobile device manufacturers is still in its infancy but the growth needle is starting to quiver.
“Texting is becoming a ubiquitous part of our day, so it stands to reason the remote message access profile is an essential addition for handsets, automobiles, headsets and aftermarket car kits,” said Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director Bluetooth SIG. “The Bluetooth MAP standard gives users the ability to simply and smartly manage incoming text messages from their vehicle while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. We are seeing significant uptake in MAP adoption among phonemakers, in particular with recent qualifications from manufacturers such as HTC, RIM, Samsung and LG.”
Ready for an update
Since SYNC launched in 2007, Ford has offered several significant and simple software-based updates. And owners are taking advantage, with software downloads recorded on www.syncmyride.com ranging up to nearly 14,000 each month in 2011.
Major SYNC updates that have been released to date include:
- G1 V2.0 – availability of 911 Assist™ and Vehicle Health Report for 2008 SYNC-equipped vehicles (dealership installation required) (December 2008)
- G1 V3.0/V3.1 – availability of SYNC Services for Traffic, Directions and Information services for 2010 SYNC-equipped vehicles (June 2009)
- G1 V3.2 – improved voice command structure, constant display of turn-by-turn directions and GPS coordinates for 911 Assist for 2011 SYNC-equipped vehicles (April 2010)
- G1 V4.0 – AppLink™ software application for hands-free voice control of smartphone apps for the 2011 Ford Fiesta only (December 2010)
- G1 V3.2.2 (non-AppLink)/V4.0.2 (AppLink-equipped) – increased MAP support for select 2011 and early-release 2012 SYNC-equipped vehicles with AppLink such as Ford Mustang (May 2011)
Ford owners interested in finding out if their SYNC-equipped vehicle is eligible for any of the available SYNC updates can visit www.syncmyride.com and enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). If eligible, owners can simply download the update to a USB memory stick and bring into their vehicle for installation through SYNC’s USB port.

Ford unveils "talking" cars
Ford is showing off some high-tech features that warn drivers when there is danger ahead. The auto giant, with two large factories in Louisville, says while other car companies are developing similar technologies, it is the first company to have prototype vehicles.
Those vehicles were on display Monday in Louisville.
Gridlock is something Kentuckiana motorists are familiar with especially with the recent closing of the Sherman Minton Bridge for repairs. Ford says as traffic congestion worsens around the nation, it continues to work on new technology that will make it easier for motorists to avoid accidents.
"What we are demonstrating today is what we call connected vehicle technology," says Ford research expert Mary Wroten, "where cars wirelessly talk to each other and provide warnings to drivers to avoid any threat that is ahead."
Wroten says the technology uses advanced Wi-Fi and GPS signals. Monday morning Ford turned the parking lot at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium into a test track showing reporters how the technology is applied.
For example, if you are in traffic and a car two vehicles ahead of you brakes, but the car immediately in front of you does not, this technology will warn you with a loud beep and flashing red lights on the windshield to hit the brakes. "The warning just gives a driver an indication there is a threat," says Wroten, "the driver still has to apply the brakes."
By reducing crashes, these so called intelligent cars could ease traffic delays saving drivers both time and fuel.
Ford is partnering with other auto makers and the federal government to come up with a workable system. "We are working on a joint project with other manufacturers, along with the U.S. Department of Transportation," says Wroten, "the DOT is moving toward a decision by 2013 if they are going to regulate this technology."
Ford says its too early to say how much such a system will add to the sticker price since it will be a number of years before it becomes a reality. "If the government makes a decision to go the regulation route, you could see this technology on vehicles by 2019 or 2020, " adds Wroten.
Ford says with such technology, a majority of minor accidents could be prevented. But for such a system to be one-hundred percent effective, all cars and trucks would have to have it installed.

Ford Takes Another Big Step Toward Helping America’s Schools
Ford Motor Company has become the first automotive brand to partner with General Mills to provide needed funding to schools across the country through the Box Tops for Education® (BTFE) program.
“Since this company started, Ford has always looked for ways to support our country’s youth and the education they receive,” said Jim Farley, group vice president, Ford Global Marketing, Sales, and Service. “We believe that through the Box Tops for Education program we will be able to reach and help students across the whole country.”
Starting Oct. 3, people can earn and collect Box Tops for their local school in three new ways. They can request a brochure from the official Ford/BTFE sweepstakes website at www.FordDrivesBoxTops.com, watch product videos on the website or purchase a Ford vehicle at dealerships during October and November.
During the two-month “Ford Drives Box Tops” program, Ford will redeem participants’ Box Tops, which will be given to the school of their choice. Five 10,000 Box Top prizes worth $1,000 and one 200,000 Box Tops prize worth $20,000 will be given out to the schools who have collected the most Box Tops through Ford at the end of the program.
“Ford continues to pilot innovative ways to support education in local communities,” said Farley. “We believe that we will be most successful when we give something back to our customers.”
For years, Ford has been active in supporting education and the community.
The Drive One 4 UR School program – developed as a fun, engaging way to help high schools raise money to support their sports and extracurricular activities – has seen great success. The program has received more than $7 million in donations since its inception in 2007. During those 4 years, 1,685 unique high schools have partnered with local dealerships across the United States to raise money for extracurricular school activities.
And Ford’s Driving Skills for Life program supports safe teen driving through its award-winning safe-driving curriculum, a free program that educates teens with a combination of ride-and-drive events, educational materials, customized in-school events and an interactive website. Since 2003, more than 341,000 students have been trained in safe-driving practices.

All-New Ford Escape Boasts New EcoBoost Engines
Fuel economy leadership remains the bull's-eye for Ford's new utility lineup for 2012, addressing the top influencer driving consumers' vehicle purchase decisions
Three four-cylinder engines in the all-new Ford Escape deliver improved mileage versus outgoing models; 1.6-liter EcoBoost® engine debuting in the U.S. in new Ford Escape is expected to deliver better fuel economy than competitors' larger four-cylinder engines
All-new Ford C-MAX Hybrid features more than a 25 percent improvement in fuel economy versus today's Ford Escape Hybrid
Ford continues to deliver more choices for customers craving top fuel economy, offering its largest-ever EcoBoost® engine lineup in the all-new Ford Escape debuting next month and an all-new C-MAX Hybrid that's 25 percent more fuel efficient than even today's Escape Hybrid.
"Customers are prioritizing fuel economy above every other trait when they make most vehicle purchases," said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. "Ford is meeting people's needs by offering a family of fuel-efficient vehicles - from hybrids to electrics to traditional gasoline-powered cars - packed with class-leading technology, giving customers both exciting and greener driving choices."
The all-new Ford Escape, slated for reveal next month at the Los Angeles Auto Show, features a powertrain lineup with three fuel-efficient four-cylinder options, including the new 1.6- and 2.0-liter EcoBoost engines and a 2.5-liter Ti-VCT four-cylinder. The Escape will be Ford's first SUV to be available with two fuel-efficient EcoBoost engines, delivering class-leading fuel economy and performance.
"Expanding the availability of EcoBoost technology in the all-new Ford Escape will give customers a great range of choices for the fuel efficiency and performance they want in a small SUV," said Joe Bakaj, vice president, Powertrain Engineering. "This advanced technology in the new Escape delivers on our commitment to provide class-leading fuel efficiency in every new Ford product."
Ford's 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine, which uses turbocharging, twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) and direct injection to deliver the performance feel of a larger engine, makes its North American debut in the new Escape. It is expected to deliver even higher highway fuel economy than the current Escape Hybrid, which is EPA-rated at 31 mpg. The new 1.6-liter engine also is expected to deliver better fuel economy than competitors' larger four-cylinder engines.
Since launch, sales of the 1.6-liter EcoBoost in Europe in Focus and C-MAX are exceeding expectations by 40 percent. The engine's broad, flat torque curve has been praised for its diesel-like performance.
Escape's new 2.0-liter EcoBoost will have better fuel economy than competitors' V6 engines while delivering unsurpassed performance compared to those larger six-cylinder powertrains.
Ford holds more than 125 patents on EcoBoost technology, a global approach to provide affordable fuel efficiency for millions of drivers that will extend to 90 percent of Ford vehicles by 2013. EcoBoost increases fuel economy up to 20 percent while reducing CO2 emissions by up to 15 percent.
With the addition of EcoBoost engines to the Escape, Ford will offer more advanced technology engines in its utility vehicle lineup than any other full-line manufacturer.
Next-generation hybrids for next-generation fuel efficiency
Next year, Ford also will grow its electrified vehicle production capacity when it launches the C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in vehicles. Both five-passenger hybrids will provide another fuel-efficient option for customers.
The next generation of the Escape Hybrid's award-winning powertrain moves to the five-passenger C-MAX Hybrid and features the first hybrid transmission and lithium-ion battery system Ford is building in-house.
Ford's new hybrid powertrain will be available exclusively in C-MAX, and it will deliver a more than 25 percent improvement in fuel economy versus the outgoing Escape Hybrid while still offering hybrid customers the five-passenger capability they expect.
The Ford C-MAX Energi targets more than 500 miles of driving range using the battery and engine, more than any other plug-in or extended-range vehicle. It also targets AT-PZEV status and delivers better charge-sustaining fuel economy than the Chevrolet Volt.
"The C-MAX family of electrified vehicles will provide versatile, practical options for customers who need utility while reducing carbon output and significantly lowering fuel costs," Kuzak said. "No other company is providing this type of choice in a hybrid or plug-in hybrid."
Ford developed the new generation of hybrid electric vehicles using its extensive experience with first-generation hybrids including the Ford Escape Hybrid, the world's first SUV hybrid. This led to offering the two C-MAX multi-activity hybrid vehicles that feature superior fuel economy on long road trips and in stop-and-go city traffic.
"Using our platform approach to hybridization, developing two choices for customers in the heart of the market with the dedicated, front-wheel-drive Ford C-MAX was our strategy to extend the benefits of hybrid technology to even more customers," Kuzak said.
Power of choice
Ford is delivering electrified vehicles that are attainable, meeting real people's needs in the center of the market where it counts the most.
Ford launched the Transit Connect Electric small commercial van in 2010 and will launch the all-new Focus Electric later this year. In 2012, these models will be joined in North America by the new C-MAX Hybrid, a next-generation lithium-ion battery hybrid and the new C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid.
Ford has 13 vehicles with best-in-class fuel economy. In the most recent J.D. Power survey, Ford leads in fuel economy in more segments than any other major automaker, answering the demand of consumers for more fuel efficiency in their vehicles.
Today, fuel economy is 2.5 times more important to American customers than environmental concerns when it comes to buying a vehicle.
Ford Motor Company has four cars that achieve an EPA-rated 40 mpg or higher, including Fiesta, Focus, Fusion Hybrid and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. Thirteen Ford vehicles achieve an EPA-rated 30 mpg or higher.
Ford's recent lineup of smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles has gained significant market share in key regions of the country. Vehicles such as the all-new Ford Focus and Fiesta both achieve 40 mpg or higher, boasting better fuel economy than even some hybrids.
